At Whanganui Collegiate School, we offer a range of boarding options designed to meet the needs of every student and their family. Our approach ensures students can progressively immerse themselves in the full boarding experience as they grow within our community.

Imagine finishing a spirited sports match or House competition and returning to your House to celebrate the highlights with teammates and friends. Weekends are brimming with engaging activities that challenge students physically, mentally, and spiritually. Coupled with our robust academic support, Full Boarding provides the ideal environment for personal growth, academic excellence, and preparation for future success, including scholarships.
Full Boarders enjoy up to three leave weekends each term. Two of these weekends begin after Saturday classes and sports, while one special leave weekend—available for significant family events—can start after Friday lessons, with the approval of teachers and coaches.
Regional Boarding is available for students who reside within our defined Regional Boarding Area, offering a flexible balance of school and family time.
Regional Boarders can access up to five leave weekends per term, granted at the discretion of their Housemaster. While flexibility is valued, Regional Boarders are encouraged to stay at school on weekends to fully engage in House life, friendships, and activities. Weekend leave typically begins after Saturday classes and sports, ensuring students are fully immersed in the Collegiate spirit during the week.
For families living within approximately 20km of the School, Whanganui Boarding offers a unique and accessible option. Designed for students within the Ministry of Education’s Area of Reasonable Convenience, this option allows students to board at a reduced cost for four nights a week (Monday to Friday).
Whanganui Boarding provides local families with the opportunity to enjoy the structure, camaraderie, and academic support of boarding life while maintaining close connections to home.
Our Casual Boarding option provides day students and Whanganui Boarders with the flexibility to stay in boarding Houses when needed. Whether it’s for an evening of focused study or social engagement, students are welcomed into the House community, space permitting and with prior approval.
Casual Boarding includes dinner, bed (with linens provided), breakfast, and full pastoral care from the boarding House staff. At just $85 per night (GST inclusive), it’s an accessible way for students to experience the benefits of boarding. Applications can be made through your Housemaster.
